Samsung slaps four rear cameras on a phone, because why the hell not?

Update: Samsung launched the Galaxy A9 in India today priced at Rs 36,999 ($518). The device will be available from November 28.

Today in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Samsung announced the world’s first phone with four cameras on the back: the Galaxy A9. The company has aimed the mid-range device at photography enthusiasts.

A few days ago, Samsung released the Galaxy A7 with three rear cameras. Now, it has gone all guns blazing with a quad-camera system on the back of the Galaxy A9.

The four rear-side sensors are:

24-megapixel main sensor, f/1.7

10-megapixel telephoto sensor, f/2.4, 2x optical zoom

8-megapixel wide-angle sensor (120-degree), f/2.4

5-megapixel depth sensor, f/2.2

On the software side, the camera app has AI scene recognition to enhance photos. Apart from four cameras on the back, the phone’s covered in glass and has these rather mid-range specifications:

Processor : Exynos 7885

Screen : 6.3-inch FHD+

RAM : 6GB/8GB

Front Camera : 24-megapixel, f/2.0

Battery : 3,800mAh, USB-C fast charging

Internal memory: 128GB

Software : Android Oreo 8.0 with Samsung UX Experience

The phone will be available in select markets mid-November. It’ll be available in Caviar Black, Lemonade Blue, and Bubblegum Pink colorways.

Earlier this year, the Huawei P20 pro’s camera impressed us, but we have to see if Samsung’s quad-camera system manages to trump it.
