PSA: Apple will now fix your MacBook’s faulty keyboard within a day
Apple has made a key change to how it handles keyboard repairs with MacBook and MacBook Pro models, so you’ll be able to get your laptop fixed in roughly 24 hours from the time you bring it into the store. So if you’ve been living with faulty keys for fear of having to give up your computer for a bit, now’s a good time to get that sorted.
According to an internal memo sent to Apple Store employees and obtained by MacRumors , the iPhone maker has revamped its repair process so as to be able to fix keyboard-related problems in-store, as opposed to shipping them to an off-site repair center.
The memo, titled “How to support Mac customers with keyboard-related repairs in store,” also advises Genius Bar technicians to “prioritize” the repairs for a next-day turnaround time.
“Most keyboard-related repairs will be required to be completed in store until further notice. Additional service parts have been shipped to stores to support the increased volume. These repairs should be prioritized to provide next-day turnaround time,” reads the memo.
Apple’s attempt to speed up the repair process comes after the company’s laptop line has been crippled by several issues stemming from the introduction of “butterfly”-style keys in 2015. The lower profile allowed for slimmer devices, but caused the keys to feel “sticky”, in turn causing letters to repeat unexpectedlt, and at times resulting in them not responding and popping out of place.
But following years of complaints and three lawsuits, Apple launched a keyboard service program to offer free repairs for out-of-warranty MacBooks. It also apologized for a “small number of users” experiencing keyboard issues with their 2018 models.
With the repair time now down to 24 hours from the previous three to five business days, the new process should help assuage frustrated customers seeking a quick fix for their keyboards.
